Here's a list of known facts about cockroaches that may suprise you, may astound you, but hopefully will help you to rid your home of these pests.

  • Cockroaches have been linked with allergic reactions in humans like asthma and skin rashes. This is the biggest reason to rid your home of these and other pests. The health of everyone in your home is at stake.
  • The oldest cockroach fossil is about 280 million years old. 80 million years older than the first dinosaurs.
  • A cockroach can live for a week without its head.
  • A cockroach can live without food for a month and water for 2 weeks.
  • Tropical cockroaches are often brightly colored green, yellow and red.
  • Some female cockroaches mate just once and are pregnant for the rest of their life.
  • A cockroach can hold its breath for 40 minutes.
  • Cockroaches spend 75 percent of their time resting.
  • A cockroach has 6 legs and more than 18 knees.
  • A cockroach can run 3 miles in a hour.
  • The world's largest roach is six inches long with a one-foot wingspan and lives in South America. Yes they have wings.
  • A cockroach doesn't shed its skin, It sheds its skeleton which is on its outside. For several hours after it sheds, it's white with black eyes.
  • Cockroaches normally reproduce sexually. However a few species, when males can't be found, the female can reproduce without him. It's called parthenogenesis and can produce all female offspring.

The best known species are: American cockroach, German cockroach and the Oriental cockroach, sometimes called a Waterbug or Water Bug.

The American cockroach is about two inches long and is oval shaped. The female can hatch as many as 150 offspring per year. Their wings won't develop until they became adults.

The German cockroach is about 1/2 inch to 5/8 inch long and is oval in shape. They are brown to dark brown in color. They can be found anywhere, but most common in the United States. Their life span is about 6 months.

Oriental cockroach

The Oriental cockroach, often called a Waterbug or Water Bug is about 1 to 1 1/2 inches long and is oval in shape. They are dark brown to almost black in color. Oddly enough, they came from Africa. They normally travel along sewer pipes and drains. They like to live where it's dirty, dark and moist. They seem to like cooler temperatures than most other roaches.

 

The idea that we can just plug it in and forget it,
is appealing to say the least.
